POSITION: Mine Manager
JOB OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Mine Manager is responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership to the Mining Operations and Mine Technical Services teams while ensuring safe, efficient, and cost-effective mining operations aligned with production targets, budget objectives, and long-term business goals.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (Non-exhaustive)
Job Responsibilities
Management
❖ Lead and manage the Mining Operations and Mine Technical Services teams to ensure the mining department deliverables are achieved safely and efficiently.
❖ Provide technical leadership and oversight for large-scale open pit mining operations.
❖ Manage the mine engineering, design, planning, survey, hydrology and water management activities and schedules.
❖ Liaise with the Process Manager in terms of ore delivery and grade to ensure optimum plant performance in terms of throughput and recovery and overall mine to plant reconciliation.
❖ Develop both short- and long-term mine planning including pit sequencing, ore grade control to ensure maximum ore recovery and minimum ore dilution, stockpile management, waste dump design and construction, and interface on tailings facility layout and construction as related to mine waste usage and schedule;
❖ Ensure Mine Planning team provide production schedules and operation plans in accordance with the Life of Mine plan
❖ Prepare periodic (weekly, monthly, etc.) production reports to senior management
❖ Drive a culture of quality and efficiency within the department focused on maximizing grade.
❖ Ensuring the procedures, practices and systems to the Mining department are in place and operating effectively.
Contractor Management
❖ Closely monitor the daily, weekly, monthly and annual activities of the Contractors against the agreed contracts.
❖ Ensure the delivery of expected outcomes are achieved by Contractors (e.g. tonnage, budget, resourcing etc.)
❖ Manage the review of the contracts between the Contractor and Management
❖ Proactively manage Contractors to ensure issues are identified and resolved as quickly as possible
❖ Liaise between Management and the Contractors to keep both parties working together at optimum to achieve expected deliverables
❖ Develop reporting mechanisms to ensure management team remains informed on operational performance and key issues
Budget and Financial Support
❖ Plan, approve and monitor departmental operating budgets and capital expenditures to meet stakeholder and strategic objectives Ensure all charges remain within budget, report on cost variances and identify merit-based continuous improvement opportunities.
❖ Review and recommend major transactions for purchases and contracts.
Management of Employees
❖ Ensure personnel have the appropriate equipment, licenses, skills, induction and training to safely undertake their tasks.
❖ Promote and adhere to appropriate internal methodologies, policies, procedures and standards.
❖ Consistently maintain a high quality of work across all allocated functions.
❖ Interpret legislation, government standards and agreements.
❖ Provide input/informed commentary, improvement opportunities and areas of risk to management.
❖ Be accountable for the quality of work output from the Mine department.
❖ Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements as well as Company Policy, Standards, and Procedures through training and development of staff and promoting by example
Staff Development
❖ Provide guidance, coaching and technical assistance and support to the Mining team.
❖ Monitor and evaluate the performance of the team to identify areas requiring improvement and implement training and coaching measures to ensure employees receive sufficient training enabling them to perform their duties in a safe and efficient manner.
❖ Conduct formal career development discussions with employees and identify development opportunities and programs that assist with defining future career progression possibilities.
❖ Mentor et develop potential successors
Safety Management
❖ Demonstrate visible leadership and commitment to Health, safety, environmental, and Social Responsibility practices.
❖ Ensure every person within team is fit for work and operate in compliance with Company standards and procedures.
❖ Ensure that agreed procedures, safeguards and controls are applied and used.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
• BS Degree in Mining or equivalent.
• Mine Managers Certificate
Experience:
• Minimum 10-15 years’ experience within open pit mining operations, including significant experience in a senior leadership role.
• Minimum 5 years management experience, including staff supervision, budget management, strategic planning and evaluation.
• Extensive knowledge of gold operations in developing countries is essential.
• Excellent understanding of the mining industry, industry practices, regulations and technical advancements.
• Extensive knowledge and understanding of mine planning and mine surveying functions for large scale open pit operations.
• A proven history in delivering results to schedule and budget while having demonstrated a proactive commitment to a safe working environment
• Experience of working effectively in a senior management team environment.
• Experience working in multicultural environment, preferably in Africa or other developing regions.
• Able to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization and build effective relationships and networks.
• Possesses strong training and mentoring skills with the ability to develop an effective team.
• Demonstrates strong conceptual skills and be capable of developing lateral and practical solutions.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to respond to a changing work environment.
• The ability to manage multiple projects and tasks at the same time.
• A reputation for integrity and ethics.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Fluency in English is required; working knowledge of French would be considered an asset.
